You start on Via dei Fori Imperiali with the Colosseum behind you and finish inside the Circus Maximus, by way of the Pyramid of Cestius, Castel Sant'Angelo and St Peter's Basilica. On paper it is fast, with only around 56 metres of total climbing, but the tight turns and the sampietrini, Rome's historic cobblestones, break your rhythm and punish your calves. Worth rehearsing in training if you are chasing a time. March temperatures usually sit between 9 and 15 degrees, which is close to ideal. Not a Major, but a World Athletics Elite Label race with more than 35,000 entrants across all events.
